If we do this route in winter should be well equipped for the cold: the shady usually frost almost all day, especially during the stretch of the ravine Soriguera. In this regard we must pay special attention to the woods of the bridges that we crossed, it may slip. We must pay close attention to the orientation, path changes are frequent. For the more adventurous, there is the possibility of extending the tour up to the Tossal of Puial, a panoramic summit 1.914m which offers an even wider view of the whole territory. If we make this climb, we must add to the schedule described 3h. The road to climb the Tossal comes from the village of Tornafort.

Starting point of the tour is located at the Hotel Restaurant Les Brases Sort. Sort we arrived at the C-13. Les Brases The hotel is situated on the same road C-13, just outside the town at its end N. The C-13 is the main road that links and crosses all the people from end to end. Opposite the hotel is free public parking spaces where we can park the vehicles.

We started the route at the  Hotel Les Brases (0: 00h - 692m). We walk along the C-13 road, crossing the town of Sort in the direction of Tremp (S). We cross the river Noguera Pallaresa by the bridge of the N-260 road.

Bridge over the Noguera Pallaresa.

Just at the eastern end of the bridge we see a red sign of the Natural Way of Sort and the Ássua Valley where it puts "Tornafort / Llagunes". During the first part of the journey we will follow these vertical signposts towards Tornafort, paying attention to the various crossings that we will encounter.

We pass by a gas station and soon the paved street gives way to an unpaved track. The road runs along an extensive alluvial plain known as Les Vernedes; Formerly there was a large riverbank forest where the alder predominated, "vern" in Catalan.

Currently there are several poplar plantations, from which wood is used for paper production. It is common to see trucks that come to load this wood, which helps us to understand that the primary sector still holds a significant weight in the economy of Pallars Sobirá. We left on the right the detour towards the Edge of Ritort and we followed the main road, arriving at a second fork. Here we must be aware: although the vertical signal seems to indicate that we must turn to the left, we must continue straight, following the profile of the mountain.

If you look carefully and walk in silence, maybe we will surprise some squirrel!

We turn off the left path.

Here we can enjoy incredible views.

A little further on, now, we left the main track taking a detour to the left and following the vertical signal. The road becomes a path and takes a detour to climb a short slope of about 15m.
We left the track and went up the left path.

We continue along the path, through oaks, trees and white thorns. We walk protected by a wooden railing and overlooking the beautiful plain of Les Vernedes. After about 10 minutes, we reached a  crossroads (0: 40h - 685m). We left on the right a wooden bridge that crosses the river and we continue straight up. During the first 100m the road is poorly defined, but soon we find yellow paint marks that help us to follow it.

We came to a crossroads.

We now start a beautiful section through the ravine of Soriguera, natural entrance to the valley of Siarb, the valley of the river of Cantó.

Nice stretch of path through the grim ravine of Soriguera.

Always following the yellow marks, we advance with the water course next to us. We only get away from it during a small stretch that takes us through ancient pastures and the old border of Orient, currently half hidden among the vegetation. We recovered the bank of the river of Cantó and soon we crossed it by a wooden bridge.

We crossed to the other side of the Cantó river.

Soon we arrive at a meadow where we have to pay close attention: we leave behind to the right a well defined road that climbs towards Llavaners. We, although the land is not well marked, we must go to the left, until the end of the meadow, without leaving much of the river. A white yarn to close the cattle gives way to the path to follow (SO).

We arrive at a meadow, we must turn to the left, by an unclear path.

We continue going up the valley of the river of the Cantó by the path that climbs by the orographic left bank of the river of Cantó.

We find another wooden bridge that takes us to the other side of the river.

We began to ascend by making loops and we entered a beautiful oak tree. Terrain with terraces and dry stone margins tell us that this skirt was formerly cultivated and that there was an old horseshoe road leading up to Soriguera and Llagunes.

Road stretch between oaks.

After this section, the road descends again until the river bed, where we find the bifurcation towards Puiforniu (1: 30h - 980m). We turn right (S) and cross the river, now by a cemented pontoon.

At this point we must be very attentive, it is easy to go wrong. We leave the path that climbs in a straight line and continue along the most marked road, which immediately turns to the right and becomes blurred when you reach a double white yarn that marks the access to a meadow.
We follow the path to the right.

We have no choice but to go over or under the fence, paying attention to whether it is electrified. During some times of the year, it is possible that the yarn is not, which will facilitate the passage.

We cross the meadow and we see that the road climbs to the right. We follow it for about 60 meters and then we see some yellow paint marks that indicate a sudden turn to the left. We take this detour, which makes shortcut avoiding the long loops of the road.

From the path you can see the Rock of Baén and the town of Soriguera.

The trail rises steeply, but after 10 minutes we arrive at the entrance of Puiforniu, a small village that has managed to preserve its mountain character. To the left we have the small hermitage of Santa Cecilia. We pass under a curious walkway with railing that connects a house with the cover of Cal Vaquer and we go out on the road.

We arrived at Puiforniu and passed under a gangway with rails.

Follow the walkway with rails for a few meters to the right and, before reaching a fountain to the left of the road, leave the road (yellow paint) and climb a ramp to a curious tunnel that leaves us in The highest end of the village.

After climbing the ramp the road enters a very curious tunnel.

We follow the path delighting the view with these incredible views.

We go to the Llau de Toscarri enjoying magnificent views of Tornafort, on top of a hill.

We cross the stream and the road begins to rise making loops.

We follow the yellow signs at all times and we arrive at  Tornafort (2: 30h - 1,281m).

Entrance to Tornafort.

We can be distracted visiting this beautiful and well preserved town. We recommend taking, to the left, Camí Vell de Taús (well indicated in the information panel of the Natural Park of the High Pyrenees). If we do, after 10 minutes we will arrive at some meadows from where we will be able to enjoy the most spectacular views of all this route: the Tornafort hill and a spectacular row of high mountain peaks like the Tuc de la Cometa, the Montsent de Pallars, the Montorroio, the Rocky Stalk of Llessuí, the Mainera, the Crest of l'Avia, the Muntanyó, the Bony de las Picardes, ...

Views of Tornafort from Camí Vell de Taús.

We return to the entrance of Tornafort and we direct our steps towards a vertical signal that is located next to the containers of the municipal garbage service. The sign indicates the way to Malmercat and Sort. This vertical green signage, the red vertical signage of the Natural Way of Sort and the Ássua Valley (which we have already followed at the beginning of the route) and the yellow paint signs will indicate the route to be followed until the end of the route. We pass through a tunnel below the LV-5131 road and start a descent along a very pleasant stretch, enjoying extensive meadows of grass and the imposing silhouette of Tuc de la Cometa in the background.

We pass through a tunnel under the LV-5131 road.

We went down through grassy meadows. In the background, the Tuc de la Cometa.

Soon we went out onto the road, right up a fairly steep bend.

The trail leaves us in a curve of the LV-5131 road.

Next we take a section where the trail is shortening the detours of the road and crossing it several times. We also walk along the same road during some stretch.

We are following the yellow paint marks.

We pass by Cal Portaler, a house on the side of the road. Just after this house, the trail leaves the road and climbs to the right.

We enter a red pine forest with boxwood undergrowth, known as the Obaga de Malmercat, where it is possible to hear the black whistle while it stings the trunks of the oldest or already dead trees.
The trail leaves us back on the road.

Yellow paint mark on a pine tree on the other side of the road.

Views of the village of Enviny and the summits of Montsent de Pallars and Montorroio.

After crossing the road several times, we abandoned it definitively and began to descend with more determination for an oak tree. Finally we arrived at  Camí Vell de Malmercat (3:30 - 725m).

We arrived at the crossing of Camí Vell de Malmercat.

We turn to the right in the direction of Sort and soon we see, down to the left, the old farmhouse of Saverneda, with a reputation for having the best and productive meadows of the whole Pallars Sobirá.

Nice view to the Plans of Les Vernedes.

In the same farmhouse is the entrance to the Drac Forat, also known as cave of Saverneda, an underground cavity of visit highly recommended. We continue along the path, we cross the river Cantó by a wooden bridge and soon we arrive at the crossing of roads (3: 50h - 685m) where, on the way, we have taken the road to the ravine of Soriguera. Instead of returning to Sort along the same road, we now take the road on our left, passing between the Cantó River and a metal fence.

Crossroad, we continue to the left.

We advanced between the Cantó River and a metal fence.

Soon we arrive at a leisure area that has an information panel. We are in the confluence of the river of the Cantó with the river Noguera Pallaresa, axis vertebrador of all the Pallars Sobirá. We turn right, following the popular Camí de Les Vernedes.
Nice section next to Noguera Pallaresa. We can observe blackbirds.

Accompanied at all times by the Noguera Pallaresa - where we can easily observe the aquatic blackbird - we leave the track and continue along a path that climbs a few meters and is protected by wooden railing.
We continue to the left leaving the track to the right.

We continue until we reach the  Hotel Les Brases (4: 30h - 692m), the final point of our excursion.

We arrived at Sort.

Arriving at the bridge, we turn left, until we reach the C-13, the main road.

We continue straight a few more meters until we reach the Hotel Les brases.

We have already reached our destination.
