A day of winter route in the Aigüestortes National Park?

Three people stand on the shore of a snow-covered lake with mountains in the background
The only National Park in Catalonia is the Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici Lake National Park. With over 14,000 hectares, it is located in the central Pyrenees, next to the Autonomous Community of Aragon. The park combines the characteristic beauty of the high mountain landscape with a rich cultural heritage.

In both winter and summer, the National Park is a must-visit if you want to enjoy nature in an idyllic and highly protected setting. Numerous trails allow you to explore the park, although it's always advisable to be cautious as this is a high mountain area. Especially during the colder months, it's important to check the weather conditions in advance.

The park is divided into two areas: Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici Lake. As this is a specially protected area, private vehicles are prohibited, but both are easily accessible via 4x4 taxis departing from Boí and Espot, respectively. This is an alternative if you don't have enough time to hike the route, or if you simply don't feel like it, or if snow makes access difficult, as the destination is reached in about twenty minutes, and other excursions suitable for all ages depart from there, from the simplest to those requiring a high level of physical fitness.

Water is the park's main attraction. It boasts more than 80 lakes and countless rivers and waterfalls, as well as the characteristic meanders of the high mountains, which give rise to the park's name, Aigüestortes (crooked waters).

Convinced? Then we've got all the information you need to spend a winter day in the park.

Whether through the National Park, toward the north face of Corticelles (or Little Canada), or the Espot portarró (a classic viewpoint of Lake St. Maurici and the Encantados), or through the outskirts of the Park, toward the Rus Pass or the Moró Valley; a full 5- to 6-hour hike through the black pine forests, or even, if you prefer, a walk among the pine trees of the Aran Valley.

Learn about the environment around us, the landscape, the snow, and the natural life that thrives within the high mountain forests.
