The Pallars Sobirà region offers some of the most spectacular high mountain natural environments in Catalonia, with a great diversity of species perfectly adapted to the conditions of the Pyrenees. Its different vegetation levels are home to a unique fauna, where emblematic animals such as the white partridge, the chamois and the ermine, typical of the alpine floor and the highest areas of the mountain, coexist.
A little further down, in the subalpine zone, the forests of black pine, Scots pine and fir are the habitat of forest species of great natural value, some of which are threatened. Among them are the capercaillie, the Pyrenean owl, different species of woodpeckers, the roe deer and the fallow deer. In fact, the large expanse of forests in the region makes Pallars Sobirà one of the main refuges for the capercaillie in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as one of the territories where the last specimens of the Pyrenean brown bear can still be found.
On the sunniest slopes of the region, the fauna adapts to the open spaces formed by thickets of piornals, neret and other shrubs. In these environments we can find species such as the partridge, the hare, the wild boar and the deer, in addition to a wide variety of birds and medium-sized carnivorous mammals.
In the mountain area, near the inhabited villages and towns, the deciduous forests, meadows and winter pastures are the habitat of species of Central European character. Animals such as the owl live in these spaces, as well as several species of forest birds. The rivers and lakes with crystal clear waters, so characteristic of Pallars Sobirà, are also home to the common trout, the moorhen and, with a little luck, the occasional otter.
Finally, flying over the great peaks of the Pyrenees, the birds of prey stand out, turning the sky of Pallars Sobirà into a true natural spectacle. The vulture, the bearded vulture and the golden eagle are some of the species that can be observed soaring over the mountains in search of food.
El Pallars Sobirà is, without a doubt, a privileged territory for lovers of nature, photography and wildlife observation in complete freedom.
