The fauna of Pallars Sobirá

The Pallars Sobirà region boasts natural environments typical of the Catalan high mountains, along with the fauna typically associated with them. These include species perfectly adapted to the cold, such as the white partridge , the chamois , and the ermine , which live in the alpine zone.

A little further down, on the subalpine floor, we find forest habitat species (some of them highly endangered) such as the capercaillie , the Pyrenean owl , different types of woodpecker , the roe deer , the fallow deer , and many others that can be seen with a bit of luck. In fact, due to the large area of the region occupied by red pine and fir forests, this is where the largest population of capercaillie in Spain is found, as well as numerous places where the last brown bears in the Pyrenees mountain range take refuge.

On the sunny slopes, the grey partridge , the hare , the wild boar and the deer , among others, dominate the fauna linked to the thickets of gorse, rhododendrons and other shrubs, as well as a significant list of species of birds and medium-sized carnivorous mammals.

On the mountain floor, very close to the still inhabited areas, deciduous forests and the increasingly scarce winter meadows and pastures will be the characteristic habitat of Central European species such as the bullfinch and the woodpecker , among others. In the clear rivers and ponds (so abundant and characteristic of Pallars), the common trout , the dipper, and some otters are present.

Finally, the population of birds of prey species such as the vulture , the bearded vulture and the golden eagle will fly high over the peaks in search of food.
