The entire Pallars Sobirà region has always been a purely livestock and agricultural region, which has influenced the local festivals and traditions, which until very recently mainly followed this cycle.
A few years ago, the gatherings took place during the month of May, just before the sheep shearing and the branding of the flocks for their journey up the high mountains. The local fairs took place during the autumn months, coinciding with the sheep drive, while the local festivals took place during the winter months, when the locals had little work to do.
But all of this has changed in recent years due to tourism, so various changes have been made to the dates on which the main festivals are held, moving them to the summer months. The summer months are precisely when the number of visitors is greatest. It's also important to note that some fairs have disappeared with the changing times.
Among the most important local festivals, we must take into account dates on the liturgical calendar such as Carnival (where you cannot miss its exquisite Carnival farcit, its calderadas, as well as the Passa), Christmas (a purely family celebration), as well as Easter (rich group meals are held outdoors).
With the arrival of summer, locals get busy celebrating a popular festival known as the Fallas de Isil and Alins. But the festivities don't end there, as during the good weather, numerous festivities and social, cultural, and sporting events typical of the Pallars Sobirà area also take place.
Nor can we forget the festival held in the town of Sort on June 24th. This popular festival sees the locals set off with torches on a night march from the mountain to the village. This tradition is worthy of contemplation, as once the villagers arrive, they all celebrate a grand communal dinner.
It's important to note that a large portion of Lleida's regions celebrate their main festivals during the month of August, a month in which the calendar is packed with exciting activities for all tastes, ranging from concert series to traditional activities.
