NOGUERA PALLARESA AND ÀSSUA VALLEY
A fantastic route that takes us into the lower part of the Àssua Valley, following the old bridle paths that once connected the villages of the area. We begin our hike in Sort, the capital of Pallars Sobirà, and take the courses of the Noguera Pallaresa River upstream to Rialp. A very steep climb leads us to the hamlet of Surp, which has retained all its traditional charm.
From Surp, we descend to the bottom of the Pamano River valley, visit the ruins of La Mola de Sall, and ascend to Altron. A long, panoramic traverse leads us to the hermitage of Sant Josep de Olp, an essential viewpoint overlooking the entire valley. The return to Sort takes us through the village of Olp.
This route is an exceptional journey through the heart of Pallars Sobirà. The itinerary begins by following the Noguera Pallaresa River, the lifeblood of the entire Pallars region. The spectacular entrance to Rialp via the 19th-century Santa Caterina suspension bridge, along with a visit to the ruins of Rialp's medieval castle, prepares us for the short but challenging climb to the beautiful Surp.
Next, we visited the ancient Mola de Sall, located on the river known as the "river of a thousand names" : in its lower reaches it is the Sant Antoni, in its middle section the Altron River, and in its upper reaches it is called the Pamano. From the picturesque village of Altron, a beautiful path leads us to the panoramic hermitage of Sant Josep de Olp, from where there are sweeping views of the Noguera Pallaresa valley and the Batlliu de Sort mountain. From Olp, the final descent is through an ancient oak forest, protected by carefully maintained dry-stone walls.
The best part of the route:
Cross the Noguera Pallaresa river via the Santa Caterina suspension bridge, at the entrance to Rialp.
Stroll through the narrow and picturesque streets of Surp, Altron and Olp.
Explore the historic paths of the Àssua Valley and the Batlliu de Sort, surrounded by nature and tradition.
