AIGÜESTORTES AND LAKE SAN MAURICIO
One of Catalonia's greatest natural treasures is the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, the only national park in our region. Located in the heart of the Lleida Pyrenees, it is the most authentic representation of high mountain terrain and is unique for the majesty of its landscapes and the richness of its flora and fauna.
The park is dotted with centuries-old fir and black pine forests and fed by nearly 200 high-mountain lakes, where chamois, capercaillie, marmot, and the legendary bearded vulture find refuge. The best hikes for those starting to explore the park are the Lovers' Path, the Burnt Rock, Lake Llong, Lake Saint-Maurice, and Amitges. Glacial features such as U-shaped valleys and natural lakes can be observed in the National Park.
The landscape includes alpine meadows and scree slopes, and the lower slopes are covered by fir and pine forests. Some of the park's peaks reach altitudes of nearly 3,000 meters, so the park has numerous mountain huts and other external services such as visitor centers.
