AIGÜESTORTES AND
LAKE SAINT MAURITIUS
One of Catalonia's greatest natural treasures is the Aigüestortes and Sant Maurici National Park, the only national park in our region. Located in the heart of the Lleida Pyrenees, it represents the most authentic representation of the high mountains and is unique for the majesty of its landscapes and the richness of its flora and fauna.
The park is dotted with centuries-old fir and black pine forests and is watered by nearly 200 high-mountain lakes, where chamois, capercaillie, marmots, and the legendary bearded vulture find refuge. The best hikes to get started in the park are the Lovers' Trail, Roca de la Quemada, Lake Llong, Lake San Mauricio, and Amitges. Glacial phenomena such as U-shaped valleys and natural lakes can be observed in the National Park.
The landscape includes alpine meadows and scree, and the lower slopes are covered with spruce and pine forests. Some of the park's peaks reach altitudes close to 3,000 m, which is why the park has a large number of refuges and other external services such as visitor reception centers.
