PRISON MUSEUM OF FREEDOM
The Freedom Trail is the name given to the route that passed through Sort and was used by approximately 70,000–80,000 people fleeing the Nazi regime during World War II (1939–1944). The mountain passes became silent witnesses to their odyssey toward freedom.
The Freedom Trail Prison-Museum was created to raise awareness of these escapes and pay tribute to those who carried them out. The space, known as Casa Xorret, formerly housed a Gothic chapel that served as a small hospital and later became the prison for "Men of the Sort Judicial District."
It was also used to imprison various groups persecuted during the Spanish Civil War and, later, people subjected to Francoist repression. Likewise, people accused of minor offenses (mainly petty theft and robbery) were arrested there as a consequence of the extreme poverty of the early years of the Franco regime.
Today, the former prison of Sort has been transformed into a museum dedicated to escaping Nazism. It is considered a monument to peace and freedom, and a tribute to the victims of fascism.
