THE CASTLE OF SORT
The town of Sort (692 m above sea level), the center of Pallars Sobirà, stretches out at the bottom of the valley, on the right bank of the Noguera Pallaresa river. To the west are the large, circular towers, the Gothic façade (15th century), and the walls of Sort Castle, which has recently undergone significant renovations, including the opening of a multipurpose space inside that hosts exhibitions and various activities.
The town expanded beneath this settlement, following the course of the river, as far as Carrer Major and the Raval district, where the Plaça Major (Main Square) meets the town center, dominated by the parish church of Sant Feliu. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the construction of the road from Balaguer to Vall d'Àneu, the river was diverted, allowing for the creation of Parc del Riuet and the construction of a new neighborhood between the town and the new river course and the Passeig de la Pallissa (Pallissa Promenade).
In recent decades, Sort has expanded northward with the creation of the La Solana neighborhood, eastward with the Borda de Paisan urbanization, and southward with the creation of an industrial facilities area in the vicinity of the Les Vernedes sector.
